Overview

This 4 day Cairo and Alexandria tour pairs the Giza Pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum with a full day on Egypt’s Mediterranean coast, all from one Cairo hotel. There are no internal flights and no packing between cities, which keeps both the price and the logistics simple.

What the Alexandria day adds

Most short Egypt itineraries stay with ancient kings. Alexandria shows the city Alexander the Great founded and the Ptolemies ruled. You go underground at the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa, where Egyptian gods are carved in Roman style, see Pompey’s Pillar, walk out to the Qaitbay Citadel on the harbor and finish at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina. Expect an early start, since the round trip by road takes a good part of the day. Our Alexandria travel guide gives background on each stop.

The Cairo day

With your guide you cover the pyramids of Giza, the Great Sphinx and the Valley Temple, then spend the afternoon in the Grand Egyptian Museum. Lunch is included on this day and on the Alexandria day.

Prices by season

  • October to March: $555 per person sharing a triple room, $753 per person in a double, $1,355 for a solo traveler.
  • May to September: $505 triple, $685 double, $1,245 solo.

International flights, the Egypt entry visa and tips are not included.

Pace and practical points

Day 1 is arrival only, so a late flight costs you nothing. Days 2 and 3 are both full, with lunch built in, and Day 4 is kept free until your airport transfer. Comfortable shoes matter more than usual here: the Giza plateau is sandy and uneven, and the catacombs in Alexandria involve a spiral staircase down to the burial chambers. Spring and autumn give the most pleasant weather in both cities.

To trade the coast for temples, the 4 day Cairo and Luxor tour is the same length. Arriving a day early gives you time for Saqqara or the Citadel through our Cairo excursions. More value trips are listed under Egypt budget tours, and any of these days can be reshaped as a tailor-made tour.
